Products proven to be useful for periodontal disease control have been tested by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC).

Products are never a replacement for teeth brushing.  Products with the VOHC seal may be useful in the control of periodontal disease; however, the VOHC does not test for safety!  In fact, we all need to continue our own knowledge on optimal care for our companions.  We need to watch our pets every time you give them a "chew" product, treat or a toy.  These items can potentially be swallowed, resulting in injury.

A client asked me about the safety of a dental diet.  She read that preservatives (BHA and BHT) within some foods may be harmful (possibly cancer causing) to pets.  I contacted a Hills veterinarian and was told that these preservatives were removed from t/d diet.  I was provided the following information; "t/d diet is preserved with mixed tocopherols, citric acid, phosphoric acid, beta carotene and Rosemary extract".
