Oral burns are more common than would be expected with the fastidious and descriminitive behavior of cats. We have seen both chemical and electric cord chewing related burns in our veterinary dental specialty practice.
The diagnosis of oral burns
The diagnosis of oral burns is typically derived from a history of chewing electric cords or exposure to caustic chemicals such as potpurri or household cleaning chemicals.
The treatment of oral burns
Oral burns can be life threatening. Electrocution can cause severe respiratory distress due to pulmonary edema. These cats need emergency and critical care. Treatment of the oral burn follows patient stabalization.
These were bony sequestra removed from a patient 14 days after the original injury. The lesion was closed immediately after the injury resulting in wound dehisence (wound opened up).
